What Is 3D Photography?

When somebody mentions 3D, most of us think of going to the cinema to watch a movie and putting on those strange 3D glasses. Instead of seeing a flat image on the giant screen, we see the characters and other things in the film jump out at us. 3-dimensional (3D) photography follows the same reasoning, creating photos with greater depth.

The details of these images are lifted off the page, and they are incredibly realistic, making us feel like we are actually in the picture and not just seeing it. In this guide, we take a closer look at what 3D photography is, how it works and differs from 2D photos, and what 3D photography is used for.

What is 3D Photography?

A standard digital or printed photo is only 2D, and only the width and height can be detected in the picture. There’s absolutely no depth. As a result, all 2-dimensional images appear flat to the eye.

3D photography is different from 2D photography as it has introduced depth into the photographs. Adding a 3rd dimension makes us believe we move inside the photography and makes the subject in the photo sound proud.

How Do 3D Photos Work?

We as humans can see everything around us in 3D. Our eyes can naturally detect depth, width, and height. This is because our brain processes information from both eyes to give us stereopsis vision, meaning we can perceive depths and assess distances.

A 3-dimensional photograph employs the exact principle by using two photos of the same subject, one offset from the other. It then merges the two images to create a picture with 3 dimensions.

The 2 images are used at slightly different angles to create the same stereopsis vision as our eyes see with the camera. Seeing images from various perspectives adds body and depth to the photographs.

So, even though, in reality, you are still just looking at a flat photo, the effect of the 2 offset images creates a sort of illusion, tricking our brain into perceiving there’s depth in the photos.

What is 3D Photography Used for?

3D photography is an exciting way of adding a new dimension to recorded pictures. Moreover, it can be used to a significant extent to help you do business. The most effective uses of 3D photography will take advantage of the space and distinct sense of realism the format allows. For instance:

●   Special effects

Your imaginations are the only limit when it comes to 3D photography. You can create 3D videos with green screen backdrops, where you can place your subjects in so many different adventurous and exciting settings.

You can make them jump from the top of the plane, swim with sharks, fly like superheroes, and be in places they never imagined. There are endless possibilities with 3D photography.

●      Display your products

Even though online shopping has become quite the norm, there are still many shortcomings. For instance, you cannot physically examine the products you include in the virtual shopping cart. However, you can use 3D photography and create an incredible online shopping experience for your clients.

Your customers can inspect the clothes from multiple angles and visualize how they’ll look from behind. This better insight into products will make your customers happier and result in fewer returns or exchanges.

●      Pop-up promotions

Setting up a 3D photography booth is the best way to engage passers-by and get them to share some exciting branded content.
